Goodbye to Oprah’s Golden Ticket:

Interesting piece on the mammoth literary publicity machine known as Oprah’s Book Club by The Millions’ C. Max Magee. While I have enjoyed most of the books included in her recommended reading list, I must say that brandishing out a book stamped with Oprah’s seal of approval sort of makes me feel a sort of emasculation - my snooty, elitist, pedantic inner literatus cannot stand the fact that I am reading a book recommended by Oprah, even if my reading it is not spurned on but just coincidental with the recommendation.

Hope this doesn’t suck. M. Night has been the king of diminishing returns with his movies lately. Each one suckier than the previous. I loved Sixth Sense so much, which is why it pains me to say, Mr. Shamalan, what happened?!

Alice: It’s a lie. It’s a bunch of sad strangers photographed beautifully, and all the glittering assholes who appreciate art say it’s beautiful ‘cause that’s what they want to see. But the people in the photos are sad, and alone, but the pictures make the world seem beautiful. So the exhibition’s reassuring, which makes it a lie, and everyone loves a big fat lie.
